[Music] it's not secret anymore AI is not an idea it's already happening we need to introduce to actually teach students how to use AI that could be at least a requirement they are facing challenges technology is moving so fast and we are reaching the point honestly and I see it something new every week we're all if not on the same page at least in the same chapter of the same book with how to implement AI because then it gives a recognition to all of the teachers all of the students this is the stand Viewpoint from us on AI and then gaming as a way to replace what we have right now in terms of ucation generally speaking be in Japan us wherever we are I think the educational system is is in need of some kind of shakeup hello everyone I'm very happy to be joined by Dr troud and EG Mar brilliant Educators Robert is a professor at of English language teaching at huz Japan EG is's a keynote speaker presentation coach tedex trainer and also a university and structure at Conan University to master uh I will uh let them introduce themselves and let's start this uh wonderful panel about education Ai and future our kids and Humanity well first of all Hi Sam hi CJ thanks for including me in this wonderful uh panel I think this is a really great very important Focus for people to listen to now uh my name is Robert stoud uh as Sam said I'm a professor at horse University in Japan I've been living here for almost 20 years now and I've been very much involved with uh all levels of Education here and trying to understand the future of education for students in terms of not only language learning but also things like critical thinking and helping them try to find their place within the rest of the world because Japan is quite an isolated place I have a PhD in Applied Linguistics and I've been publishing and presenting globally for a couple of decades now so hopefully people watching this may may have met me I may know you and that's about it from me yeah glad to be here than gentlemen for having me involved in this I'm going to do the best I can to keep up with you doctors CJ marks originally from San Diego California I've been in Japan for just about the same amount of time as rer has I have had the benefit pleasure and privilege of teaching at every level in the Japanese school system from Nursery School through to University pram School Juku I had the opportunity to be the education coordinator for one the largest private entities out here I do a lot of speaking Toast Masters tedex so I'm hoping to add a certain perspective to this panel honored to be here thank you very much thank you listen it's not secret anymore AI is not an idea it's already happening my first question it's about impact of AI classroom dynamics about two how AI can assist teachers we would like to have your feedback on yeah thanks Sam that's a really good place to start and what is the classroom going to be looking like for all of us um at any level in high schools and even younger ages in universities and this fantastic toour as Sam said is no longer a secret it's here it's in the classrooms and what is that going to look like how's it going to change things so in terms of Dynamics I think what we have to realize is that we've really invited in something much more powerful than we realize to help direct the learning and help students collaborate and really put us as Educators on our toes I think that the role of the teacher is specifically going to change a lot and the way in which students start to think about their learning has to change as well AI has become such an unclear thing for a lot of people for a while like where does it fit what should it do and there's just a a huge amount of information flying at students and teachers kind of stressing out like okay how do we actually apply this where does it fit so from my viewpoint the way that classrooms need to change is from an educator standpoint we really need to stand back and really watch our students we really need to know the ways that they're going to take hold of it and use it it's such a personal thing AI isn't it so they may want to use it in different ways and they may use it at different speeds from each other so I think the most important thing in terms of Dynamics is that teachers really learn how to become more facilitators and not the Le Us in the classroom we really need to appreciate what we've got there with the power of AI and help guide students I would say more than anything and let students find their own feet with the AI it's far too early for educators to be true teachers of how to use it in my opinion so I think we just need to support students I think that's the most important thing and kind of collaborate with the AI to help it become a useful thing rather than a hindrance which it may be doing in some cases those are thoughts I'd love to hear from CJ and from yourself Sam as well but I will concur with what Robert said when the early stages of a phenomenal period And I think a lot of us are still trying to figure out what's going on and how to implement AI in the classrooms and I think it's a good thing truth be told I think we could all agree that generally speaking be it Japan the us wherever we are I think the educational system is is in need of some kind of shakeup far too long I think the Educators have been relying on outdated obsolete materials and I know a number of folks are not sure how to go or where to go with it but anything that inspires us to be better I'm inclined to believe he a good thing and I think it's going to force Educators to be more not just always cognitive but thinking more so about the needs of our students individually so concise answers I think AI is a good AI in the classroom has potential to do a lot more good than not and it's taking the whole industry of Education into the 21st century and forcing Us in the classroom to be better more motivated more intuitive teachers I think the revolution needs to be much more explicit I think the method we have right now belongs to the very far fast the way the education system was built is to produce machines people memorize things follow orders and become a good citizen in the capitalistic system and now Sou we have machines that outperforming our kids most of the time we are trying in that system to make people memorize affirmation in a way or another should be not literal sometimes but still memorization and knowledge and that's outdated today and even before AI you Google the information you have it you don't need to memorize it anymore with AI become worse even a lot of task that until now was exclusive to human become very easy to the machine people memorize things are trying somehow would compete with their it's unfair competition now I recognize we human have creativity critical thinking and I think this is the future still AI can be used to help teacher draft their new kind of education it's very fun to use AI to to draft teaching materials it's very impressive fast and in fact we know all how to use it just we are not used to because the same way we used to extract information manually by going online searching analyzing I tell people all the time you need prompt engineering if you talk to AI the same way you talk to any human the algorithm they built it's natural language processing so it will go and get you the right information so smarter your discussion with AI smarter the result you will and um the revolution we need one of the major things that I think we need to change and maybe get shut off and it will be very helpful and all students will be happy the grading why we need still to grade people it's really unfair in a way when you tell them hey don't cheat don't collaborate and in real life it's exactly the opposite and first thing we do on companies we Ando what we used to do in Academia Academia tell them don't cheat don't check each other what you are doing but in company to them hey collaborate teamwork so this is maybe one of the obvious things that we need to change get rid of grading going to a system critical thinking team building you should tell the employee when we are doing training hey cheat from each other because this is learning this is one of the best way to learn is to check your friend how we work that how you can do it so I'll go and ask Robert because I'm very interested he is teaching creative thinking and this is like a follow-up question to the first one how you think creativity should be teached in the age of AI That's a wonderful F question and um I think there's a lot of opportunities using AI that are being overlooked right now Sam as well I think that when we talk about creative thinking and the discussion that you just gave about how AI can help us come up with ideas and things that's all wonderful that's all true but there's also everybody sees this word of cheating and it's very unclear what cheating means and a lot of the research that I'm doing at the moment and I know a lot of other academics there's a sense of guilt among students uh this word guilt comes up a lot am I using it in the right way is this just cheating so we need to clarify for students how they can or should be using Ai and not feel guilty about it to help them become more creative also there's another level to this which I don't think people are really thinking about enough at the moment when we get feedback from AI when we get this output when we get this support for our learning that gives us a wonderful opport Unity to think creatively about what it's telling us as well this interpretation of is that a reliable outcome is that something I can really trust is that something I should uh fact check myself and if we do that that's another level of creative thinking that this powerful talk gives our students it doesn't have to just be from the AI or not the AI this kind of partnership really can push students in their creative thinking it absolutely inspires students and curiosity I've noticed even the do topics things CJ will tell you about in Japan and I'm sure any country if you give students that dreaded write something or have a discussion about global warming it's just H really that topic again but when you do it with AI and you actually say okay well let's use something fun let's do that let's get up some get up to speed with some really good facts to really hit that other team in the debate and this creative thinking that AI helps them do it's fascinating so the topic becomes anything works really it really does support their creativity and if you tap into their Curiosities in that way it can work very effectively but as I said the problem is there's a huge fear that AI is killing creativity or killing critical thinking it really doesn't have to be that way it's how we apply it and giving students that chance to really reflect on what they're doing with the AI That's The crucial step that we need to be taking the next year or two yeah see def first before again that I actually want to add on something you said earlier I'm somewhat revolutionary to hear a person say we should do was testing right I'm take it one step further I think the whole concept and philosophy of homework should be if not done away with really curtailed and here's why I think the whole concept of homeworking of itself teaches bad life skills in the sense that okay so we grow up Elementary Primary School junior high high school secondary University taking taking our work home with us it's what we do it's what homework is and then we're expected to all of a sudden be able to have a healthy work life balance we've been conditioned to take our work home with us right so hopefully we could Implement AI properly to make it so we don't have to do so much work outside of the classroom so again to add on to not just hopefully alleviating or eliminating testing all together but hopefully curta telling if not eliminating the concept of homework as well I I'd be big on they asked the question on the table what Robert was saying I agree with in terms of just how to implement AI properly so first of all AI itself is not going to make a person creative this we could all agree upon not just students but teachers right so teers we can't assume or presume AI is going to all of a sudden make us creative in the classroom I think it challenges us to up our game and to make sure we're bring the best for our students so this is how I see one of the many many many many ways to make sure I am inspiring my students am I creative enough am I have I revised my lesson plans because a lot of teachers are lazy I'm sure I know I could definitely attested we're creatures of habit so often times we're using the same last five to 10 plus years with AI it forces us to actually up our game to implement it properly to be more creative in classroom one one last point I liken it to the scientific calculator that that came out some time ago I remember I was in elementary or primary school and we didn't have scientific calculators right and same thing in junior high school middle school when I got to high school it existed and it was exploring our minds like you could put so many things with this calculator and it was a tool obviously it was a matter of how we used the tools and the teachers didn't know how to actually allow us to use the tools and it challenged the teachers to have to realize okay how am I going to allow these calculus on tests or not and I think we're at a a similar point with AI again challenging and inspiring the teachers to help our game there you go I like both ideas I have a similar approach in my book about the human AI augmentation when the result is a super amplification and I like how you related this to creativity so will be a perfect way to teach students creativity I love that in terms of also cheating oh my God I think we have given our students and kids poison we poison their thoughts with this cheating guilt and when my daughter is afraid to learn AI because they convinced her in school it's cheating don't use AI otherwise you will be partially downgraded in terms of uh things now it's a challenge how we Define the homework of the future because I agree with TJ as as well what does it mean to have a homework that means don't finish your work now don't plan for tomorrow with your friends or with your Educators try to finish it at home very late and suffered honestly that's what it is if you know how education system started it's to feed factories in Europe it's how it started in fact it was maybe a way to press people and when I was a kid extra homework was a sort of punishment in my if someone is not doing well we give them extra homework so they know it's it's not U good and I we go from there to the next topic that I would love to discuss is engagement because one thing is how you make student engage and Roberts start talking about it you want to teach them something that looks boring from the first point and then how to engage them and I think one of the wonderful way is gaming we we have seen this strategic game where you can build civilization when you can plan a city when you can do all kind of simulation and things I think as a method of Education in kids and engaging them with the topics it's wonderful and by the way most of these games are AI it's AI engine most of the time based on rules and now with AI improving better and better AI gaming is better and better so we can learn a lot from gaming and I think it's the way to go to create an engagement education system I imagine as a game remember that movie maybe it's Enders Game when we imagine future Military Academy and and the student thinks they are doing a game and at the end of the movie we discover it was a real bottle and because they are kids and and creative it's a movie but the writer was in my opinion brilliant by education without telling it let me reimagine education so what's your take Robert in two topics of course engagement and then gaming as a way to replace what we have right now in terms of Education I'm glad you brought this up Sam because I think engagement is an En thing that AI can support and engagement has been a part of my research for about 15 years now and I was very excited when AI came out I didn't realize at first but it hit me after a few months I was thinking wow this really could support engagement and the games that you talk about Sam as well that can be hugely connected to it there's a term in a research called gamification of learning so basically you take something that a student would normally find unae or dull for whatever reason but you turn it into a game but in essence they're doing the same thing and through that they become much more interested they reach a state of what we call Flow by a famous author called chick samii and they kind of go into the Zone if you understand Sports as well where you've been playing something and you just you forget about time you're enjoying it so much you just want to keep playing it and you're oh you look at the clock you're like wow is it that time already so AI can definitely do that um in classes and I think that needs to be a really important thing that we remember in terms of games in classrooms or in education in general I think another great thing AI is going to be able to do is this personalization of levels and goals So within games it doesn't have to be a set thing that everybody's playing or everybody's doing um AI is very good as we know adjusting to the user so if somebody's struggling with some material or somebody's um you know going further ahead than other students or have different types of goals within that course it can completely tailor that game or that way of gamifying the materials to that person and I think this is something that really needs to be looked at a lot across all subjects being taught at any age as well to date we've had some very good systems online things like flash card systems for helping students memorize things but the impact on memory when students are really engaged like that um going back to what uh CJ was saying and what you were saying Sam about the no need for homework perhaps if they're really engaged in classes and they're really retaining what they're learning because they're enjoying it and it's personalized where they are maybe the homework wouldn't be necessary anymore homework to me is helping students remember material but if the material becomes so engaging maybe yeah we can drop that so that's another thing that would be good yeah that's my thoughts on it first and foremost Ender Game that was a interesting you mention that Sam that's an amazing movie as long as long as you let the students know what's at stake beforeand I know that movie part part of the surprise was he had legitimately wiped out an entire species he was like oh that we were just training so we have to make sure we learn students know what to say recently I actually had to make some significant modifications to a class I teach concise version classes about business communication skills the students have to make a resume and I'm sure Robert can relate to this being in Japan and any other nonnative English speaking curriculum long story short is it used to take along for the students to get the resumes right L was linguistic challenges now it's easier easier okayy use the software to clear the English now obviously the software is not going to actually write your resum for you you have to know what You' done and how to actually put it into the actual paper scen so properly using the tools to help us be more efficient in class so how does that work with gaming or gang philosophies as I said earlier I think often times teachers or preaches of have self include and I have fallen Vic to the point of sometimes actually trying to direct the class to my teaching style here's how I teach you have to adjust to how I'm teaching but that's not how it should be now I've realized I have a lot more at my disposal by properly imp meting Ai and as Robert was saying earlier I have a different softw in different games that I can use to tailor eyesee and custom toiz students and how is that not a good thing whenever you're allowing Learners to actually be the best version of themselves in the classroom whenever you're able to tailor your lessons to the specific students everybody wins so I'm all for it it's it's it's how it should be moving forward as as Educators all what you said to go to our next topic because you spoke about yourself how you are updating your this call it courses how you are updating your methods and let me challenge our do we need because just now we are telling hey let's do this and that in the future immediately and using AI what we need to do what we have in our hands immediately to stay in the old system but in the same time give the the students the kids a sense of new things how we can use AI today to improve our habits as administrator as educator as thought leader and researchers and I will start with youo that's a great question Sam and uh yeah I think the biggest thing is we just need to address the elephant in the room I think a lot of students everybody knows what AI is it's here um I think a lot of educators are just kind of unsure what to say to students or how to talk about it so let's just talk about it I think my students personally have been kind of shocked in the beginning when during class I would just stop and go hang on a minute let me just ask chat GPT that I don't know and I think it's okay as a teacher to say I don't know and it actually just put it up on the screen and then being kind of like oh actually are you cheating as a teacher so I said okay let's talk about cheating what is it what are we using this for what can we use it for and just getting things out in the open with them is the first step it really is if almost like when you've got some kind of problem in your life you go to some kind of counseling meeting to talk about it it feels like that with students look we need to just talk about this it's fine to use AI but if we don't talk about it it can become a secret problem the second thing which I've really enjoyed Sam recently is just giving students the Reigns and saying to them I want you to teach the class how to use AI I'll give and this was a project I ran recently and is in a publication of mine it worked wonderfully and taught me as a teacher a lot I said you're going to have 20 minutes each as groups and you're going to teach everybody in the room some way to use AI to improve your life as a student so it doesn't have to be about the class it could be something else they came up with wonderful IDE things I had no idea about which really showed me as a teacher I need to learn a lot more from my students because they're using it in ways I couldn't imagine for example some of them came up with ways to help them schedule themselves a bit better some of them wanted to have a bit more effective or efficient time systems for their week wow i' never thought of that so we started to talk about it and that was great another one was in a language class and an English class they wanted to know how to talk to different types of people so not just have a kind of one approach to sing a language to people from another country but depending on their gender their age maybe their background maybe the situation is this in a workplace is this in a part so they started to learn how to use AI to really tailor their learning experiences like that so from a teaching standpoint I think we just have to listen to our students a bit more and we have to give them a bit of control because I think that reduces the the fear of guilt to it's fun I've really enjoyed just watch watching them go to work with it and three as a teacher I'm I was learning a lot about the reality of the situation so getting out on the table that's what I would say from my side definitely uh maybe two two points I'd say the past let's say three to five years and I think maybe Robert could test this as well I think the most popular probably Google right Sensei being teacher in Japanese Google Sensei that's that's what people always refer to often times in my situation anyway so we've already been using the technology right we've already been utilizing and bringing outside sources in the classroom in now I think this is taking things to a different level and I kind of want to walk back a bit some of the challenges that I face and I think we all could agree with it's not so much in the classroom as the students as much as it is colleagues right because now if I'm teaching an elective and I have relativ speaking if I have autonomy to do what I want you guys want to use this software use chat GPT go at it the challenge is if I'm one of let's say half a dozen teachers teaching course that stream and if I have a certain perspective on using Ai and maybe my my colleagues do not that can create some issues sonically enough I've realized the issues haven't really been with what's going with my students are cool with that we can use chat GPT great thanks the issue is wait CJ says it's okay her or his teacher says they can't use chat GPT so again you're walking it back it I'm realizing it's not as much me being using it in the classroom it's being able to use it with the authorization and the support of maybe some of my superiors and you unfortunately I'm at a great Institution for the most part people above me support it It's just sometimes my colleagues in the same level and that that's what I've realized as being one of the biggest challenges at least this year is making sure that we're all if not on the same page at least in the same chapter of the same book with how to implement AI so I realized that doesn't directly address the question you ask S but again walking it back I've come to realize that's a significant issue at least in my experience well I love to hear maybe Robert as well maybe you as well sound in terms of like not just how students perceive using it but your colleagues and and fellow Educators as well can I jump in there sorry sorry Sam that's just such an it's an interesting point that CJ brought up and um one I really wanted to talk about today as well is the acceptance of it across the board within institutes for examp I mean in Japan CJ will tell you change comes slow here which can be a good thing and a bad thing um I'm imagining in somewhere like the US the UK other countries around the world everywhere there's a little bit more proactiveness right now to make a change and what I think what really needs to happen to make what CJ was talking about better situation is there needs to be courses taught my actual opinion is we need to introduce a course into a university or a school to actually teach students how to use AI or that could be at least a a requirement at the beginning of each course even if it's only like 20 or 30 minutes of a course at the very beginning because then it gives recognition to all of the teachers all of the students across the board this is the standard Viewpoint from us on AI like CJ was saying if one teacher says yes another one says no way I mean you know I guess I don't know it's like having a a strict mother or father and the kid gets smart the kid goes to the one that's going to give him the candy and you know you need to have a teamwork between the parents you need teamwork between all the teachers and I think the only way to do that is to actually establish in my opinion a course or at least a guideline at the beginning of courses to say what they should and shouldn't do with it and it's out in the open and then you can get that fairness for students from course to course no matter what they're learning languages Sciences mathematics whatever this is what you should do with it this is what you shouldn't do with it yeah I mean the problem CJ mentioned is a very real one right now I think so I think that's the next step to help with it is definitely um at The Institute level to create something for everything all the courses to be the same I will add because this what I wanted to say anyway but I I love how you elaborate more that make my job easier I think also we need to recognize is that administrate the administrative part of any education or any organization that teaches kid or young adults they are humans too and they are facing challenges technology is moving so fast and we are reaching the point honestly and I see it something new every week and the burnout and incapability of uh living up with technology is a real thing happen and here uh technology could be the cuse but also could be the therapy they can use AI themselves to reduce their administrative earnout call it and task and that will give them more time to learn themselves one thing when I used to teach University that I have observed that once people reach a certain level in administration they stop learning they are very comfortable in their positions they are de are President of University and they think okay I don't need to produce research anymore I don't need need to update my knowledge anymore even if they don't say it loudly but with our age of AI and something new coming every week competition between Google and open AI reach at a point they come up with a great Innovation one month later the other company doubl The Innovation just to get ahead of them it becomes really unbelievable so project that to the administrative uh part that I think they are overwhelmed but I will tell them the solution is the same problem problem you are trying to regulate use AI to figure out how you can use Ai and I agree with Robert you need to have the rules very early two words that could H AI very early is algorithmic bias I recently I got um in a hated debate with one of my friends about a topic and then they asked chpt and chpt give the wrong answer so I went to Old Google to find my sources effectively there was a conflict of sources and why there was that because most of propaganda websites give information and CH GPD is straight on the internet so algorithmic bias and then the other thing is responsibility who say it's okay it's not okay right the I is just a tool and has algorithmic bias take care over that's a fascinating question uh I'm not sure it will kill AI but it's definitely something people have looked at and showed a lot of concern about the way I see it Sam is the same way that you might take part in the media studies course at University we look at the media for example and you know I won't name Network names we probably know some of the ones I'm talking about where there's you know a huge amount of bias towards maybe one side of an argument or a conflict and um those are courses that are very good for critical thinking for students they look at that and they analyze the media how are they using specific vocabulary how are they using imagery how are they using specifico ches of people that they interview to push one side more than the other maybe intentionally or not intentionally so AI may be doing that because all AI can do is gather information that exists if it doesn't exist it can't create it right we know that so it's Gathering what it can and it may unintentionally be showing this logarithm bias or any kind of bias towards any kind of side of an argument so if we're aware of that and we make sure that everybody stays aware of that I don't see why we can't use that as an opportunity to to look at what it produces and actually analyze it ourselves I don't think we should ever be 100% reliant on the outcome from Ai No No matter how good it gets I don't think we should be 100% reliant on anything we hear from a person anyone even your best friend sometimes maybe they've got some reason they're telling you something maybe they're trying to convince you to go to a party with them or something and they're not telling you why there's always something behind something that we're not aware of but we always use our think and we always use that as an opportunity so in terms of bias from AI maybe in a way it's a good thing that it exists in there because that does give us an opportunity to think about what we're being told if we suddenly got told tomorrow okay AI is perfect it's never going to give you an answer that's incorrect and it's never going to give you an answer that favors one side over another is that not the point where we stop thinking so I think that maybe that bias is something that we need in the system in a way whether that's intentional or not um and I don't think it will kill AI I don't think it will end up being as dramatic as that I think it it's most important that we just stay aware of the fact that it's just kind of one person telling us something no matter how smart they are and and if we think of it that way I think it'll be fine yeah I concur in um to be we could look at AI of course those two Ls AI can mean so many things people say artificial intelligence I'm a flipper now say it could be AI as an accountability instrument it forces us as Robert was saying to be accountable a let me give you two clear examples class I'm actually teaching at the universities American studies is teaching about America to first year Japanese students and one of the components is talking about cultural leaders Business Leaders particular anyway Michael Jackson the leg Michael Jackson came talking about the move he used to do which is him moving backwards what's that move called everybody says the moonwalk no it was misnamed that that move Michael Jackson did called backslide right for whatever reason the majority of people think it's called the moonwalk but it's not called moonwalk I actually have the benefit of meeting the man actually trained and talk Michael Jackson that name is Jeffy Daniels anyway all that to say this AI is just the most recent example of how information could become hegemonic quote unquote knowledge and could be wrong right so we can't rely on one tool be it AI or as Robert was saying you're human being we always have to invent our sources give you second example as the students have to write biographies on certain figures one of the figures being Walt Disney and you asked your average let's say your average Japanese citizen episode age about Disney W Disney get a lot of positive things for obvious reasons the majority of my students were completely unaware of the World War II Type propaga cartoons Disney was directly responsible for and it just completely changed their whole perspective how okay this one human being was was able to do so many good things and so many let's say not so good things that just that just comes back down to having multiple sources so again be it AI or human beings we can never never ever ever ever rely on just chat GPT or just this network or just that teacher to be the source of knowledge and information could be a source but whenever we fall down that rabbit hole going off one source as being the ultimate voice that is always going to be problematic AR let me just do a small follow for example open AR Google for example it was this scandle when they generated pictures uh that's supposed to be historic when we saw black Nazi soldiers Japanese Native American not make sense because in their algorithm they wanted to be let's call it diverse so it start generating things diverse when it shouldn't yes there is sometimes something not good in our history our history as you said the example of Walt Disney and involvement in World War II we don't know maybe in 50 years from now for we laugh at our behavior and moral standard of you don't say that term anymore because it's offensive and it's true today it's offensive tomorrow we don't know maybe bias will be a big word we never know so when I'm afraid and and am for AI if you follow me a little bit you will know how much I am for AI but I'm afraid really of uh sanctions censorship and I think it could kill AI because if we start to have ai systems the same way we have media system I like the analogy Robert did with that to be catastrophic are you using a left AI a right AI Progressive it would be like even a joke but it's where we are heading to and unfortunately I is just algorithm written by human and if you have a follow up on this heat I have no problem with Disney I like Disney I don't need the Disney people coming after me just be clear yeah yeah Disney I don't e them on my back at all I like Disney just the Balan history of Disney anyway yeah just something you said reminding me about the terminology we use and just doing the best we can with the current information we have clear example I was I was in a situation where I actually refer to somebody as ma'am was what what I I would say traditionally speaking it was a woman called ma'am and she seemed very offended by that what do you mean by that I just trying to be polite the way I came up sir and ma'am were how you addressed certain people not of age just if you're being polite and I've come to realized I've been reminded more than a couple times this past year that presuming someone wants to be called Sir or man is just not presumption and it it forced me to realize how I address people unless I'm comfortable and clear on these two words sir ma'am I realized that okay I can't always lead with that and that I think kind of draws that to the point you're making Sam about in current context it may seem relevant and okay but who knows 25 30 years from now how could you say that so be it AI or not AI it's something that I've been reminded of I think we all have that in current times you have to like have to always update keep learning and keep keep in terms of how we communicate and addess people most sort just a quick follow up on that yeah yeah I mean I I'll just add something quickly again as well I think um just as we move on as as you were saying Sam and CJ as well I mean it makes me of some of my favorite comedians who nowadays they been into all kinds of trouble for the things they say but like 30 years ago would just be the funniest thing you've ever heard but you know just just so much uh more regulation or you know care that needs to be taken with the things you say because there's many more groups and it can understand it that's great you know there's a lot of people with their own issues in society different types of groups that need to feel respected and feel part of the community because it's always changing you know there's always different types of groups entering different sexualities different minority groups so we need to be aware of that and that's great but it does cause a lot of problems for AI if it's just AIS like the friend who can't shut up so basically it's a a bit of technology that will just spur out anything I think that really makes the teacher much more important I think that if that's talking about classrooms or education especially going down to the younger Learners if they're going to have this Wild West version of AI and it will just tell them anything and kind of fill their brains up with things the teacher becomes more and more important as a I would I'm not going to say filter because that's kind of censorship or taking away their right to look at that information but more of a guide to let them really think about what they're reading if there are other viewpoints that are possible too yeah yes I agree with you I think the role of the modern education should be more of comp I think we need to be somehow teaching morality what does it mean to be right or wrong because the machine will be biased has no morality and our history is really full of weird and failed experience not not to say more about that I will move to another topic which is related a lot to the Next Generation and I would call it super intelligent human and I will speculate a little bit and I say we will have a new generation the same way we we are born with electricity we are born with bra video TV exist already in our life and was okay have now a new generation that will be born with AI so my question for you also maybe some prediction of the future will we have this super intelligent human very soon should I go first um well we we talk about nature versus nurture sorry we talk about nature versus nurture with um people becoming smart right is it natural that you're that smart or is it the nurture so if we talk about nurture how we take care of people to develop into the kind of human being that they are I don't think AI is just going to do that by itself it's going to have to really be the way they're nurtured by the people who train them to use AI the people who teach them how to interpret AI how they communicate with others about the AI as well because the human connection is enormous it's a part you know we are humans the way we've survived for so many Millennium is just you know the way we connect with each other the way that we share information the way we pass information down I don't think I'm at all such as AI just by kind of putting it in into a room with people or putting it into their lives is going to make them smarter Einstein obviously said you know when technology surpasses humans we all become stupid right so it it's not a case where we don't question how anything Works in our lives anymore I'm exactly the same you know if I turn on my computer that I'm talking to on now or my pH if something goes wrong with it I I'm kind of Clueless what to do with it but we didn't start out like that we started out by actually having you know a lot more thinking about the way things are going so AI needs to go through that stage and super humans or super intelligent humans I I'm of a little bit clueless on where that will lead us and I'm a little bit worried it could go the other way I think it all depends on how we nurture the people using it that's my opinion CJ absolutely it's amazing actually just a couple hours ago my daughter about the same age as yours s two and a half years she yeah calling out to The Ether CI all with some music stuff so be Siri be Alexa yeah these are these young younger are growing up with things we just didn't grow up with that being said I again with everything Robert said data and information are not necessarily intelligence as we all could could on So when you say super intelligent I think goes without question that this next is St more information more data around them but as did we you know we we internet came on later and our but Television right the radio it's been like that for a long time AI is just the newest version of how we consume or have access to information but it's not just about if a student if a person if a child is informed that establishes intelligence right there's also the whole intuitive emotional so maybe a person will be exposed to have a lot more data to make them more quote unquote cognitively capable but it doesn't necess me that they're intelligent from overall holistic human perspective and that's that's a responsibility of parent teacher any kind of a leader is to make sure that person is not just being informed or inated with data but actually knowing what this means and how to use the information responsi because that our argues what creates true it's challenging but that yeah just CJ just really made me think about something that happened to me recently a lovely little trophy on my background here that I didn't win it that was from my students who were in a a presentation contest recently and uh because of my great love of it I said okay present about AI so we talked about AI all semester and they did an English presentation contest about their research on AI and their research topic was how University students perceive Ai and one of the judges at the end of the competition had one of the best questions I I had thought of to ask my students which I'll share with you and I'm going to use next semester with my students the students said that ai's best point was it an extension of getting information so the judge's question was what's the difference between getting information and learning and my students lost the contest first place I'm sure because of this question because didn't really have an answer and to be honest I was sat there kind of stumped like okay what is the answer to that so you can get a lot of information AI you could imagine as a superpowered Google or something like that now just give you all this information but does that mean you're actually learning does that mean you're actually improving your thinking it doesn't it takes more than that and I think it's the job of the teachers like myself to figure out what it is we need to do to transform that into the learning and a lot of that is the thinking and the collaboration with the teacher and you know talking about it so um I wanted to share that after what CJ said hi I felt it was an amazing discussion thank you for this wonderful uh feedback Robert do you have a last word to say before we uh say goodbye yeah well obviously thanks Sam thanks CJ I've really enjoyed talking about this and this is something that we need to talk about a lot more is how AI is going to fit into our lives so my closing thought I guess would be for for teachers and students and maybe parents too ai's future is a collaboration it isn't a replacement for anything especially not for humans so please try to think of ways that it can fit into your life with the awareness that you need to work with it uh not relying 100% on it or against it yeah not much else to ask thank you again Sam Rob for having me involved in this car and great it's amazing because next year is 2025 that's 25 % of the the century at least from my perspective coming up 21st century was supposed to be all kind of stuff going on and I can say in many regards this whole AI Revolution actually feels in my opinion feels like what I was promised as as a child first century stuff going on so be it education be it business finance I think we're in the early stages of a a very significant period as Robert say sam definitely concurred it's not just to AI to write our human history and to plot our course it's going to take all of us to be involved actively assertively maybe even aggressively deciding how we're going to implement and use this for the benit of humanity there you go so it was a great panel I think it's a step forward toward how we can use AI in education for a better future for our kids and our students and the whole Humanity thank you we have been a great panel and hopefully we'll do a follow-up panel soon thank you again thanks Sam he [Music]
